Community Background

Summit County is a rugged mountainous county located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.  It is home to numerous ski resorts and summer recreation destinations, including Lake Dillon and mountain peaks of the Continental Divide. The county typifies many of the rural-resort communities across Colorado. The population consists of a natural mix of permanent residents, seasonal residents, and workers, with a large influx of visiting tourists during the holidays and on weekends during the high seasons. While the majority of residents have insurance, the percentage of uninsured residents in Summit County is above average. Meeting the needs of the dynamic population coupled with the rural nature of the county has required high levels of collaboration across the business, nonprofit, and governmental sectors within the county.

Within the health care system in Summit County, there is a long history of shared assessment and collaboration. There are strong working relationships between the local system components, including the hospital, health care providers, community clinic, and county health and human services. This kind of collaboration has been critical to creating a health care system that can address the unique needs of the county. These needs range from primary care and prevention, substance abuse, and injury prevention to the acute trauma needs of an area known for its recreation activities.
